Srinagar, Jan 26 (KNO): The Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) at Lal Chowk turned into a vibrant portrait of patriotism and celebration on Monday as scores of people, both locals and tourists, gathered to mark the 77th Republic Day in Srinagar. The tricolour fluttered high, and the atmosphere around the city’s most recognisable landmark was filled with patriotic songs, cheers and laughter. The Clock Tower was surrounded by crowds taking selfies, waving flags and capturing the moment on their phones, as a sign, many said, of a changing Kashmir. Among those who drew attention was Aarun from Gujarat, his body painted in saffron, white and green. Carrying a large national flag and “a miniature model of the BrahMos missile”, he recalled visiting Kashmir every Republic Day since 2022. “I come here every year to celebrate with my Kashmiri brothers and sisters,” Aarun told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). “The feeling of hoisting the Tricolour at Lal Chowk is something special. It is about peace and togetherness.” Several tourists also joined him in expressing admiration for the city’s spirit. Ritika Sharma, a visitor from Delhi, said the experience was heartwarming. “I had only seen Lal Chowk in news reports, but today I saw people smiling, singing, and celebrating together. It felt emotional to witness this kind of unity,” she said. Locals said the growing footfall and open celebrations marked a shift in the city’s mood. Riyaz Ahmad, a local, said this year’s crowd was among the most peaceful and cheerful in recent memory. “It is good to see people from outside coming here without hesitation,” he said. “The Clock Tower has seen many phases, but today it stands for peace and normal life.” Another student from Srinagar, who joined the celebrations, said attending the event was a way to reconnect with hope. “I came here with my friends just to feel part of something bigger,” he said. Officials said adequate security arrangements were in place around Lal Chowk and adjoining areas, and the celebrations concluded peacefully—(KNO)
